Part-time Compensated Federal Youth Policy Internship - Spring Semester 2009

The National Alliance to End Homelessness seeks an intern to assist the Youth Program and Policy Analyst staff to assist with research, correspondence, and advocacy efforts to secure federal appropriations for youth housing opportunities. The stipend internship requires 12 to 15 hours each week and will last from January to May 2009. Work hours are flexible and may include some off-site research and writing.

Intern responsibilities include:

  • Locating and reviewing peer-review articles and studies focused on unaccompanied, homeless youth;
  • Monitoring advocacy efforts before Congress and the federal Administration;
  • Completing telephone and web-based surveys to nonprofit stakeholders;
  • Identifying local and national stakeholders interested in federal advocacy focused on homeless youth and youth housing models;
  • Maintaining database of legislative campaign advocacy stakeholders;
  • Designing internet newsletter and correspondence regarding federal public policy;
  • Initiating and maintaining communication with prospective stakeholders and community members identified by Alliance staff;
  • Assisting with researching, drafting, and editing of various publications including issue briefs;
  • Completing various word processing, copying, and telephone tasks;
  • Attending various community meetings.

Qualifications for Student Intern:

  • Previous experience with research of law, policy, and clinical study;
  • Strong research skills, ability to synthesize and summarize data;
  • Well-organized, focused and detail-oriented;
  • Self-starter, initiator and ability to meet deadlines;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite including Excel;
  • Strong professional verbal and written communication skills;
  • Interest in public policy and relationship building with individuals and groups focused on youth advocacy;
  • Interest in federal advocacy focused on poverty, homelessness, and youth issues;
  • Interest in youth homelessness and foster care youth who have emancipated from care;
  • Student interns with prior life experience or work experience in homeless or low-income communities, communities of color and/or LGBTQ communities is a preference.

Terms of Employment:
Part-time intern position for five month time period, (January through May 2009) requires 12 to 15 hour work week. Intern stipend is $3360 to be paid in bi-monthly installments.

Part-time Federal Advocacy Internship - Spring Semester 2009

Description: The Spring Federal Advocacy Intern will gain an understanding of how to organize an advocacy campaign, impact federal policy (specifically on homelessness), how local constituents can impact federal policy, strategy and message development for effective advocacy, programs that successfully end homelessness, and the root causes of and solutions to homelessness.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist in the execution of the Alliance’s National Audio Conference on “Ending Homelessness in the New Congress” – disseminate information, assist with the development of materials, act as the point-of-contact for participants
  • Assist in the execution of a Congressional Briefing on Homelessness – update the Congressional staff database, develop and disseminate the invitation, assist with the development of materials, conduct outreach to Congressional offices
  • Assist with the execution of a media campaign in conjunction with the release of the Alliance’s Homelessness Counts report
  • Attend weekly Program and Policy Staff meetings and external meetings and hearings as a representative of the Alliance

Qualifications: A successful candidate will have a commitment to and interest in issues related to homelessness, poverty and politics. S/he will have relevant experience, excellent writing and communication skills, excellent organizational skills, and an ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and be attentive to details. Additionally, s/he should be very comfortable talking to people on the phone.

Other: The Spring Federal Advocacy Intern must be able to work at least 16 hours a week. This internship is unpaid. The Alliance is located at 1518 K Street, NW, Washington DC 20005, and is METRO accessible via the blue, orange and red lines (McPherson Square or Farragut West stops).
